Om vast te stellen dat er inderdaad sprake is van een wervelkanaalvernauwing in de nek wordt een röntgenfoto gemaakt. De vernauwing van het wervelkanaal kan worden vastgesteld door een MRI van de nek.

MRI scan

Belangrijk is ook een MRI-scan van de halswervelkolom. Op de zijdelingse MRI kunnen niet alleen de botrichels worden herkend, maar ook zachte weefsels. Zo kan druk op het ruggenmerg goed worden beoordeeld en ook of er door de beknelling geen schade is opgetreden aan het ruggenmerg. Ook het bestaan van een eventuele nekhernia kan middels een MRI snel worden gediagnostiseerd.
