A shoulder joint roughly consists of five parts: the head and socket, the tendons, the bursa and above that the roof of bone. The head and socket of the shoulder are made of bone with a layer of cartilage. The socket of the shoulder is relatively small, but the head can move well within it.
Several tendons attach to the socket and head, allowing the shoulder to move. These tendons run across the shoulder head and under the roof of the shoulder. It can happen that there is calcium in these tendons of the shoulder. This involves deposition of calcium crystals in the tendons of the shoulder around the shoulder head. Contrary to popular belief, calcium deposits in the shoulder are a soft, toothpaste-like substance.
It is believed that these calcium deposits can be observed in 3 to 5% of the population. In one-third to one-half of these people, it results in complaints in the shoulder. Slightly more often in women and often between the ages of 40 and 55.
Lime deposits in the shoulder do not or very rarely occur in children and also not or rarely at older ages (>75 years). It is something that forms at some point and, in principle, also dissolves on its own. However, this can take a very long time (from several months to years).
At Bergman Clinics | Exercise, you can visit us to remove calcium from the shoulder using the Needle Aspiration of Calcific Deposit (NACD) method.
