If you have a severe eye deviation, then laser eye surgery is probably less suitable for you and we recommend a preset lens implantation. In this process, we implant an extra lens into your eye. A kind of contact lens. This lens stays in place permanently and lasts a lifetime. The contact lens can be removed: the treatment is completely reversible.

About the front lens treatment
Bergman Clinics typically uses these three types of preset lenses. Each type of lens has its own characteristics.
1. ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)
The ICL is made of collagen acrylate and is very thin and flexible. The lens is rolled up and inserted into your eye through an incision as small as 2.5 to 3 mm. The ICL goes behind your pupil (in your back chamber of the eye). The incision does not need to be sutured, and after one day your vision is quite good.
2. Artisan lens
The Artisan lens is made of perspex and is 5 to 6 mm in diameter. This lens is placed in your anterior chamber of the eye and attached to the iris. The incision is then sutured. With an Artisan lens implantation treatment, one power is always corrected.
3. Artiflex lens
The Artiflex lens was developed by the Dutch company Ophtec. Several types of this exist. We often use the Artiflex Toric lens. This lens is placed in your anterior chamber of the eye. Implanting this lens requires an incision as small as 3.2 mm. It does not require suturing. Within a few hours, your vision will be fine. With an Artiflex lens implantation treatment, one strength is always corrected.
Starting around age 45, your eyes may become less accommodating, resulting in an increasing need for reading glasses. This is independent of the lens implant treatment and is a normal consequence of the eye's aging process.
Your eye is numbed before treatment by a small prick, similar to dental anesthesia. It takes about 15 minutes for the anesthesia to take effect. Because it is completely numb, you cannot move the eye.
1. You lie on a treatment table. The doctor makes a small incision in your cornea. The size varies from 5 to 6 mm to as little as 3.2 mm. Through that incision, the doctor slides the artificial lens into place.
2. The ophthalmologist attaches the lens to your iris or the cornea.
3. If you get an Artisan lens, the incision in your cornea is stitched. With other lenses, the incision is so small that suturing is not necessary.
4. After a final check, you will receive a protective cap over the treated eye.
With lens implantation, we always treat one eye at a time. As soon as it has recovered, you can come back for the other eye. This is possible after just one week.
After lens implantation, you must use eye drops for 4 weeks to protect your treated eye. Basically, within 24 hours you can see well again and resume your normal rhythm. After about 6 weeks, your vision will be stable. However, by treating 1 eye at a time, you may experience a temporary imbalance.
A converter lens, also called contact lens implantation, is for you if you rely on glasses or contact lenses to see sharply, and if you do not qualify for laser eye surgery. It is especially a good choice for moderate to severe nearsightedness or farsightedness: it corrects from -8.00 to well over -20.00 and from +2.00 to +14 diopters.
The result of lens implantation is permanent. The lens can last your lifetime. In about 5% of cases, the result with only a lens implantation is still not optimal. You may need additional treatment with laser. There is also a small chance that you do not like the correction. The contact lenses can then be removed again.
No surgical procedure is completely without risk. Complications can also occur with preset lens implantation, although the chances of this happening are very low. View all risks.
