Gynecomastia is the medical term for excess breast formation in men. The cause is usually unknown. Breast growth occurs in about 50% of all men. For many men, this can be a serious problem. Breast reduction surgery can be used to remove the excess fatty tissue. Most common breast reduction treatment methods include liposuction, liposculpture or subcutaneous removal of glandular tissue. Your primary care physician is your first point of contact if you have questions or complaints about your health. If the family doctor believes you need specialist care, he or she may refer you to Bergman Clinics. The referral will be sent digitally to Bergman Clinics or you can bring the referral letter yourself.
Depending on age, breast formation in men comes in two types. Young men who are in puberty and have excess breast formation. The breast formation disappears spontaneously as they get a little older and require no treatment. Breast formation in middle-aged men. They have no choice but to undergo breast reduction surgery.
The cause is usually not known. Breast size changes without cause but in some cases a specific cause can be identified, such as thyroid problems, liver disease, due to the use of drugs such as steroids.
