Professor Jan-Paul Roovers (1971) is a gynecologist. He is also Director of Science and Innovation at Bergman Clinics and thus responsible for scientific research within all divisions.
Read moreDoctor Roovers studied Medicine at the University of Utrecht. Since 1996 he has been intensively engaged in patient care and scientific research in the field of pelvic floor problems and pelvic floor surgery in particular.
In Utrecht on the effects of surgery in the small pelvis on urination, defecation and sexual functioning. After his training as a gynecologist, he worked at the University Hospital of Leuven to further specialize in pelvic floor surgery (operations due to prolapse and/or unwanted urine leakage). He also specializes in the (surgical) care of women who have suffered damage to their pelvic floor due to complicated childbirth.
He has performed surgery by invitation in nearly 40 different countries, aiming to educate colleagues worldwide in surgery.
Dr. Roovers has been appointed professor of gynecology, particularly uro-gynecology, at the University of Amsterdam since 2014 and, in addition to working at Bergman Clinics, also works at Amsterdam UMC, location AMC.
Since 2016, Roovers has been a visiting professor at the University of Cape Town (Hospital Groote Schuur), where he researches the development of new surgical techniques. He has also established a collaborative relationship with gynecologists worldwide to improve care for 3rd world women who have developed fistulae as a result of problematic childbirth.
