Pain when urinating

Pain during urination occurs in 5 to 10% of women. 80% of women get a urinary tract infection at least once in their lifetime. Especially young women (20-25 years old) who are beginning to be sexually active and women after menopause are at increased risk. If your symptoms do not disappear with regular treatment by your family doctor, it is advisable to seek specialist care.

Treatment pathway:

For early symptoms, drinking plenty of fluids and using vitamin C or cranberry juice can treat incipient inflammation. If symptoms persist, it is important to have your doctor assess whether treatment is necessary. If you experience pain when urinating and recognize yourself in any of the symptoms below, it is wise to investigate further:

  • You feel weak or (very) sick.
  • You may not urinate or may urinate only in small bites.
  • You have blood in your urine.
  • You have burning sensations when urinating.
  • You experience severe pain when urinating.
  • You have a fever.
  • You have chills.
  • You have abdominal pain.

Do you recognize these complaints? Don't keep walking around with them!

Make an appointment with your primary care physician. Often an initial treatment can already be initiated by her/him. To visit our clinic you need a referral from your family doctor.

In the following situations, we recommend that you contact your doctor immediately at the onset of symptoms.

  • You have diabetes mellitus or a weakened immune system due to another disease.
  • You are bedridden because you have a chronic illness or are recovering from surgery.
  • You have undergone a transplant of heart, lung, kidney or liver, for example.
