What is inflammation of the choroid membrane (uveitis)?
Uveitis is an inflammation of the choroid membrane in the eye. Uveitis is used as a generic term for internal inflammation of the eye. The explanation of inflammation of the choroid is kept general, as there is great variation in this. This means that not all comments apply to all uveitis patients.
It can occur in one eye or alternately in either eye, or in both eyes at the same time. Uveitis is classified into three forms, depending on where in the eye the inflammation is most severe.
- Frontal inflammation (anterior uveitis)
- Inflammation in the middle (intermedia uveitis)
- Inflammation at the back (posterior uveitis)
This classification is important because the different forms of uveitis have different courses. Among other things, the course determines the choice of treatment. With inflammation of the choroid, the adjacent layers, such as retina and hard skirt of the eye, are usually also involved in the inflammation.
Sometimes distinction is difficult, especially if the inflammation occurs throughout the eye. Inflammation of the choroid can be highly variable. It can occur once or be present for a long time with alternating periods of rest or increase in the inflammatory process.
Causes & symptoms of vasculitis
Vasculitis can have several causes. Research is needed to determine the cause.
Symptoms of vasculitis may include:
Examination & diagnosis inflammation of the choroid membrane
An ophthalmologist at Bergman Clinics | Eyes can use a normal ophthalmic examination to determine if there is inflammation of the choroid. For this, your pupils are dilated with eye drops. This causes your vision to temporarily blur. We therefore advise against driving home yourself.
Further examination is needed to determine the cause, which may include blood tests and X-rays. Sometimes eye fluid is also examined. This is taken from the eye under local anesthesia with a small needle. After the examination, you will receive a temporary bandage on your eye.
In order to detect and treat complications in a timely manner, when inflammation is prolonged, regular checkups are necessary. During these checkups, consultation between client and ophthalmologist regarding treatment is important.

Consequences of inflammation of the choroid membrane
Inflammation can damage different parts of the eye. Known problems are:
- Corneal abnormalities
- Staar
- Increased eyeball pressure (glaucoma)
- Retinal damage
Inflammation of the choroid is often part of an overall disease process. The inflammation of the eye is then part of the inflammation in the body. Therefore, the ophthalmologist may refer you to another specialist for further examination, such as an internist or rheumatologist. Increasingly, the cause of Uveitis is detectable.
