Inflammation of the choroid membrane (uveitis)

Uveitis is an inflammation of the choroid membrane in the eye. Uveitis is used as a generic term for internal inflammation of the eye. It can occur in one eye or alternately in either eye, or in both eyes at the same time. Uveitis is classified into three forms, depending on where in the eye the inflammation is most severe.

What is inflammation of the choroid membrane (uveitis)?

Uveitis is an inflammation of the choroid membrane in the eye. Uveitis is used as a generic term for internal inflammation of the eye. The explanation of inflammation of the choroid is kept general, as there is great variation in this. This means that not all comments apply to all uveitis patients.

It can occur in one eye or alternately in either eye, or in both eyes at the same time. Uveitis is classified into three forms, depending on where in the eye the inflammation is most severe.

  • Frontal inflammation (anterior uveitis)
  • Inflammation in the middle (intermedia uveitis)
  • Inflammation at the back (posterior uveitis)

This classification is important because the different forms of uveitis have different courses. Among other things, the course determines the choice of treatment. With inflammation of the choroid, the adjacent layers, such as retina and hard skirt of the eye, are usually also involved in the inflammation.

Sometimes distinction is difficult, especially if the inflammation occurs throughout the eye. Inflammation of the choroid can be highly variable. It can occur once or be present for a long time with alternating periods of rest or increase in the inflammatory process.
