Research pain when urinating
Examination for pain during urination
When there is pain during urination, we perform extensive examinations. We know from experience that finding out the cause is an important step in treatment. Therefore, we focus on determining the causes rather than treating the symptoms. In addition to the physical examination, we take ample time to discuss your symptoms with you.
With these complaints, we do investigations, including the functioning of the bladder. Before the first visit, you will be asked to keep a urinary diary. This provides important information about bladder volume, how much and how often you urinate, and any urine leakage you may have.
Find the explanation of the pee diary here.
The schedule you complete in advance can be found here.
Flowmetrics
During the first visit, bladder function is tested. This is done by having you urinate on a special toilet, where the stream can be measured (flowmetry). The urine is checked for any bladder infection. A standard gynecological examination is also performed to check for any prolapse. We also check for any uterine and ovarian abnormalities and measure the strength of your pelvic floor muscle.
Bringing morning urine
We ask that you bring a You should bring a jar of morning urine to the consultation so that we can examine it for you. On the morning of your appointment, after washing yourself without soap, you will collect your urine. You will drain the first bit of urine down the toilet after which you will collect some urine in a clean container. Seal it tightly. Do not keep the urine outside the refrigerator for more than two hours.
Additional research
If the doctor wants to do additional tests, a new appointment is usually made. In women with complaints of pain when urinating, it is sometimes necessary to look inside the bladder. This is possible with a cystoscopy.
Cystoscopy
A cystoscopy is an internal examination of the urethra and bladder. This examination is performed using a cystoscope, a thin hollow tube The cystoscope is connected to a camera so you can watch on a screen.
